Madder Red - Yeasayer
I confess I'm not really on top of Yeasayer like I should be. After hearing ONE, I should have jumped them like a broke smack addict would. Actually, after hearing Ampling Alp I should have been on them like a fat kid on cake. But alas, I was tending to other things that day. I probably got distracted by a simile.
I digress. 'Madder Red' is the next single from 'Odd Blood' and its fabulous. It's full of 80's vibes which remind you of Top of the Pops with those super thin mics, dodgy hair and brightly coloured suits. But once you start listening to the lyrics a tragic love story evolves. Haunting lyrics and beautiful harmonies in the chorus illustrate a painful picture. The lonliness conveyed is so sad. This could have sounded like a depressing Smiths-esq car-crash of a song; but Yeasayer know how to write a good song. Interjections of 'whoooo-eeeoooo-eeooooo' lift the song completely to make it a masterpeice of a broken heart.
The repetition of 'Please don't ask me why' at the end brings the message home and the song lingers in your mind. The more you listen to the song, the more you get out of it. An amazing song.
